Big Capacity People
We’re all on a mission. We’re all focused on our own goals and the tasks that have to be completed today if we’re going to reach our goals. And we’re all focused on the feelings that we have about those tasks and goals. We’re all very aware of ourselves.
I want to suggest that there is more to live for, and that finding fulfillment in daily tasks comes as we allow our purpose to be shifted towards others. When we allow the aim of our lives to move in the direction of “for others” – “for them” we find a higher purpose. But this will require a larger capacity!
In 2008 my husband and I and our 2 boys (aged 1 and 4 at the time) “enlarged our lives” to include another nation when we moved from the USA to South Africa. I believe I heard God speak the phrase to me “Enlarge your capacity” as a directive which played out only a few months later in a move across the Atlantic.
“Enlarge the place of your tent” Isaiah 54:2
The Hebrew people knew what Isaiah was talking about when he said this, because their nation started with Abraham who was a nomad or a bedoin. They lived in tents. When Abraham’s family and his people had more children or took more people in they would sew flaps into the tent to create more space. They had to stretch out and lengthen the ropes, and a larger, heavier tent required stronger stakes in the ground.
This picture of a tent being enlarged is a picture of the potential for our lives. What God is saying through Isaiah to all of us is: Grow your life to provide a space and shelter for others. It will require us to change, to stretch and to be strengthened.
We are made in the image of God (He created mankind in His image – Genesis 1:26) and this God who we were made like is so big that He fills up all of eternity. Isaiah 57:15 describes Him as the “…One Who inhabits eternity”. Wise Solomon said, “He has also set eternity in the human heart.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11) There is something in us that wants bigness. We were made for so much more than ourselves alone.
A big capacity will look different in each of us. And the process of growing your life touches so many different things. It starts with LOVE and begins to affect the way we think and the decisions we make, which then shows up in very practical ways in our lives like our time and our money.
I certainly don’t have it all figured out. As long as I live I want my capacity to be growing. I look forward to sharing some truths from scripture, stories from my experiences and practical stuff too that has helped me to enlarge my life.
