Don’t Be Stingy with Your Love

Why is it that we withhold love? Why do we hesitate to say, “I love you”? Why do we pull back from giving genuine compliments or giving a small gift as a gesture of thanks or writing a note to acknowledge sacrifice? Why wouldn’t one send that text message to honor a job well done or to express admiration of a trait in a friend or co-worker?

Giving to others doesn’t take away from you, it adds to you. There is enough to go around!

“One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:24,25

Some time back I realized (through the kind help of my husband) that I was often disappointed in relationships. Wishing someone had called, reached out, initiated – I would pull back. But in pulling back I wasn’t being true to myself. I made a decision then to:

Love others generously – in words, in giving, in closeness – even when they aren’t generous in their love. When it comes to loving, it’s only what we DON’T say and do that we’ll regret. Be who you wish others were.

Relationships grow when you sow seeds. Take the friendship to another level by being proactive. Send that message, reply to that message, give gifts, throw that party, have friends and family over, take time, help out, stay engaged, love with your words, reach out, don’t be MIA, be fully present with your heart, be fabulous, be the friend you want to have.

As we go into the holiday season (or at any time of year) how about we decide that there are no walls up. We’re going to give love. It keeps our hearts free and it also sets an example for others to follow. Bring a generous attitude into the room, warmth into the conversation and love into the homes you visit and the hearts you visit with. Love is the most powerful force in the universe. It literally holds the power to change things. It changes people, changes atmospheres, changes culture.

Choosing to love will grow your capacity and move you further into living a life bigger than yourself.
